Growing vegetables, fruits and herbs in your home is a fulfilling experience. If you are into gardening and wish to witness the initial growth of all your plants then beginning the process from a water bottle can be a fun experience for you.

In this new series, we have been bringing you step-by-step guides to grow vegetables and herbs in a water bottle. Garlic is one of the most commonly used herbs in Indian kitchens and nothing can be more rewarding than growing them yourself. This time, let's take you through a detailed guide to growing garlic in a water bottle.

Step 1 - Get A Healthy Garlic Bulb

Garlic can be used from a garlic bulb. Select a bulb that is healthy and free from any disease.

Step 2 - Prep The Water Bottle

Take a clean plastic water bottle. Do remove the cap and any labels pasted on it.

Step 3 - Plant The Garlic

Place the garlic bulb in the water bottle. The end of the herb should point upwards. Fill half of the bottle with water, the bulb should get covered.

Step 4 - Place The Bottle In Sunlight

Garlic needs indirect sunlight to grow. Once you find a location that gets indirect sun, place the bottle there. Avoid placing it under direct sunlight as it can harm the garlic bulb.

Step 5 - Change The Water

While the plant is placed under indirect sunlight, keep changing its water. This will prevent the growth of mould and stagnation. Use room temperature water only.

Step 6 - Monitor The Plant

In a few weeks, you will see roots growing from the bottom of the bulb and shoots from the top of it. (Growing garlic in a pot)

Step 7 - Transplant The Garlic Bulb

Once you see the garlic bulb developing roots and shoots growing a few inches, gently take out the bulb and plant it in the soil. The shoot should be above the soil.

Step 8 - Water The Plant

Water the plant regularly. Garlic grows in moderate moisture, make sure you don't overwater the plant.

Step 9 - Check For Pests

If you see signs of pests or any disease, use a pest spray immediately. If the issue doesn't resolve, consider calling a professional to inspect the plant.

Once transplanted in soil, place the garlic plant under direct sunlight for 4-6 hours everyday.

Garlic requires well-draining soil for growth. Let the gardening professional know beforehand.

Garlic bulbs should be placed at a distance to give each bulb enough space to grow. If you plant them closely, you will get smaller bulbs.

Use a balanced fertiliser as needed. Avoid over-fertilising the garlic plant.

Put a layer of mulch around the garlic plant as it helps retain moisture in the soil and also regulates the temperature of the plant.
